How to Become a Mentor
Before applying to become a P2S mentor, you should consider whether you are ready to become a mentor. We are looking for mentors who are committed to helping people, just as we are looking for mentees who really want to learn and develop. This mutual understanding ensures a strong relationship and enhances the lives of all the parties involved. You may be ready when:
- You have made measurable achievements both in your personal and professional life
- You get satisfaction out of seeing others grow, develop and succeed
- You enjoy sharing your experience with others who other willing to learn and develop.
Once you have taken that decision then you should:

- Complete the online form
What Mentors Do
Mentors bring their own unique experience of work and life combined with an interest in the mentee�s development. In particular you will:
- Help the mentee bring clarity to his/her personal or professional issues through focused conversations.
- Challenge individuals to be the best they can be.
- Be good listeners and have always the individual�s best interest at heart.
- Assist the mentee with creating a development plan / action plan and provide help along the way.
- Share tips, experience and contacts learned through experience.
- Be good sounding boards.
The Benefits
Being a mentor is both challenging and stimulating. The benefits deriving form mentoring others can be very rewarding both at a personal and a professional level. Mentoring helps building and developing coaching and counselling skills, many of which are transferable to your personal and working life.
Mentoring keeps you engaged, active and increases your sense of satisfaction deriving from �giving something back�. You may acquire a greater understanding of issues through reflecting on them with your mentee.
Mentoring extends the value of your years at work and allows you to leave a legacy.
If you are older than your mentee, you will enjoy gaining insights into the next generation. Mentoring will expand your range of networks.
Mentors Responsibilities
- Provide One-2-One mentoring to mentees face-to-face or virtually via telephone and email.
- Be a positive representative of P2S mentors by promoting the value of mentoring.
- Uphold P2S�s mentoring standards and code of practice. Participate in P2S�s mentoring training programme and, where possible, to networking and educational events.
- Provide case study as additional resources for the website when and if required.
Mentoring Training
Once you have been accepted to become a mentor, Shine will send you details of the mentor Training Programme. The purpose of the mentoring training is to equip you to be the best mentor possible, understanding how to manage the relationship, determining goals and objectives together with your mentee and making the relationship productive.
Characteristics of a Successful Mentor
- Someone who can trust and who has the interest of others at heart.
- Good at encouraging others.
- Energises others through enthusiasm and envisioning.
- Good open questioner.
- Non-judgmental and avoids jumping to conclusions.
- Able to draw on personal experience.
- Well developed understanding, insight and wisdom concerning the sector and his/her own area of expertise.
- Demanding but supportive critic.
- Willing to give time to actively listening others.
- Finds it easy to empathize with people of different backgrounds.
- Someone who earns respect of others.
- Committed to his/her own persona/professional development.
- Reliable in keeping to appointments.
- Successful and satisfied with his/her own life.
